Work Experience with Steve Finn

Today I had a whole days workshop with Steve Finn, who is the director of several dramas including Eastenders. He started off with a short talk about directing, and what relationships/attitudes you need to have with actors. He then gave us all a script, which we analysed, and then shot (only using one shot). We all took in turns of directing our own take of the script. This also meant I did other jobs including sound man, cameraman and acting.

After lunch we got given a different script, and this time we were allowed to use multiple shots. This became really helpful because I learnt about crossing the camera. Overall it was a great day, and I learnt many techniques and got some good tips from a very experienced director.

Directions Unit: Sound Design Title

I have decided to name my project "The Journey" as it links in with the theme. It also makes it easier for the audience to understand that the car is moving. This title does not give the story away, which makes the crash a surprise and gives it a greater impact on the person watching it

Directions Unit: Sound Design Music

I have decided to use some loud upbeat music as a diegetic sound in my project. The idea behind it is that the person in the car tunes his radio until this song comes on:

I chose this song because it's upbeat and likely to distract a driver if played at a high volume. It also gives a good contrast with the seriousness of the crash, as the song will suddenly stop when the car collides

Directions Unit: Sound Design Sounds

After examining the photo carefully, I have decided on what sound elements I need to complete this project. The sound clips will be from the "Final Cut Pro" software.

I have searched for the sounds and have found these:

Crowd laughter 2 - which will be used for the cinema

Restaurant dining - which will be used for the restaurant

Footsteps snow walk - which will be used for the man walking past the cinema

Transformer hum - which will be used for the tattoo shop

Cell phone ringing - which will be used for the drivers phone

Truck horn - will be used for the horn before the crash

Radio AM - will be used for the tuning of the radio

Directions Unit: Sound Design Development

I have developed my idea further by creating a theme for my project. It will be used as a "message" to the audience to concentrate on the road, otherwise you're in risk of danger. This can be executed by having a piece of text at the end of the clip saying "concentrate on the road" or "be safe"

Directions Unit: Sound Design Software

I will be using "Final Cut Pro" for my sound design project as I believe this is suitable due to it having all of the relevant effects needed.

I will be using the "crop" tool to select parts of the picture I want to use. I will then be using the "transform" tool to make the cropped pictures the right sizes

Directions Unit: Sound Design Idea

Due to the image having a car on ice, I have decided to create the scenario of the car crashing into the bus which is situated in the background of the image. I will do this by having close-ups of both vehicles and then using sounds to create a crash. The screen will then cut to black and sirens will play in the background

Directions Unit: Sound Design Plan

I will be using this picture for my sound design project:

As you can see, it's a street with a winter setting. Straight away i'm thinking about the snow/ice and what that would do to the car (situated in the middle of the picture)

After close examination I have also noticed the two shops either side of the picture, therefore I will be using sounds for them too

Directions Unit: Journey Through Freedom Idea

The protagonist will be a young woman (aged 24-26) who is part of an abusive relationship. It will start with her waking up in her bedroom which will look as innocent as possible. The other character will be the violent husband of a similar age. They will meet in a forest which will have a hidden meaning to the couple. The package will be divorce papers as this will give the young woman a sense of freedom.
